The Inland Cyber Defense Clinic recently attended the NICE Conference & Expo, a national gathering focused on cybersecurity education, workforce development, and the future of the cyber profession.

For ICDC, this was a great opportunity to hear from educators, industry professionals, government partners, and workforce leaders about where cybersecurity training is headed. A major theme throughout the conference was that preparing students for cyber careers takes more than teaching technical tools. It also requires helping students build communication skills, professional confidence, ethical judgment, and the ability to work with real organizations facing real cyber challenges.

That message connected strongly with the work we do at ICDC. Through the clinic model, students are not just learning cybersecurity concepts in the classroom. They are applying them in real-world settings, working with community partners, identifying risks, explaining recommendations, and learning how to approach cybersecurity as a service-oriented profession.

One of our biggest takeaways from NICE was the importance of making cybersecurity pathways more accessible. The cyber workforce needs people from different backgrounds, disciplines, and communities. Events like NICE remind us that cybersecurity is not only about technology. It is also about people, education, opportunity, and public service.

We left the conference with new ideas about student training, workforce readiness, and how ICDC can continue helping students grow into thoughtful, capable cybersecurity professionals.
