The Sixth Annual Religions in Conversation Conference
2013 Schedule
The Sixth Annual Religions in Conversation Conference of Claremont Graduate University, will be held on February 22 and 23, 2013, and is entitled “Sacred Vows, Sacred Bodies: Gender, Marriage, and Sexuality in Text and Tradition.” The issue of marriage, sexuality, and gender is now a major political platform discussed by both parties at their respective conventions. There is no denial that political opinions about these issues are religiously motivated. Recently, academia has exploded with issues of Gender, Marriage, and Sexuality and this conference hopes of correcting, confirming, or focusing that scholarship on religion. The conference theme engages not only modern political and religious issues, but also text and tradition as it addresses the topic. The topic is meant to be broad in order to include transdisciplinary research that allows engagement and dialogue with the traditions represented by Claremont Graduate University’s religious councils: Catholicism, Coptic Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Mormonism, Protestantism, and Zoroastrianism, as well as other religious traditions. We encourage papers on the topic as it focuses on religion wholly or more specifically but not limited to: Marriage Equality, Sexual Ethics, Divorce, Polygamy, Prostitution, Concepts of Love, Eunuchs, Queer studies, Gender Equality, LGBTQIA, Taboos, Religious Legal Texts, Feminism, Gendered clothing, Priesthood, Masculinity studies, Goddess worship, Pornography, Sexual Addiction and Sexual Violence.
