Mormon Emigration Index Map

This map shows the records from Fred Woods’ Mormon Emigration Index database of approximately 142,000 immigrants who traveled from various international ports to the United States between the years 1840 and 1931. Of those migrants, 131,000 records contained dates and ports of departure and/or arrival, allowing for visualization. Information in this spatial database includes the age, country of origin, ports and dates of departure and arrival, the company leader assigned to each voyage, and general voyage information. This index and other resources are available online at https://saintsbysea.lib.byu.edu/.

If you would like to view the ship departures and arrivals by time, click the far-left top timer icon which will display a time slider at the bottom of the map that can be used to step through the years.

If you would like to find a name among the passengers, click the middle left top search icon which will display a query window that can be used to type in the last name of the person.

If you would like to view all passengers by departure port or arrival port, click the top right layer icon which will display a list of layers that can be turned on and off. It is recommended to zoom in to an area of the world before turning on the passenger layers, as there are over 100,000 records that must be drawn at the largest map extent.

If you would like to view a table for any layer, click the top right layer icon and within the Layer List window, click the three ellipsis for the desired layer and choose “View in Attribute Table.”
