A series of interviews discussing Mr. Allen’s long career as a Professor of
Education, specializing in school administration. Hollis P. Allen graduated from
Pomona College (1918) and was a member of the Claremont Graduate School faculty
from 1925 until 1960.

Dewey, Sabino L. (b. 1899)

Recollections of Sabino L. Dewey. 1970.

Adopted son of John Dewey. Sabino Dewey relates the story of how, as a boy
of five, he was adopted by Dr. and Mrs. John Dewey while they were in Italy.
He talks about life in the Dewey household and his particularly close relationship
with his father.

Assistant Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent, Los Angeles City Schools
(1918-1944). Describes childhood and schooling in La Canada and Pasadena and
living with the Charles B. Sumner family while attending Pomona College (1897-1901),
graduate study at Yale (M.A., 1904). Relates experiences as teacher and principal
in San Diego Schools (1905-1908). In the main, discusses his responsibilities
in Los Angeles school system for shaping structure and curriculum in a rapidly
expanding period, general
impact of “Progressive Education,” and Susan B. Dorsey (Superintendent, Los Angeles
Schools in 1920s).

Schneider, Herbert (b. 1892)

Recollections of John Dewey. 1963.

As an undergraduate and graduate student, and then as a faculty member, Dr.
Schneider worked closely with John Dewey. Comments of Dewey’s basic theories
about education, his philosophy of art, his political beliefs, and his attitudes
about religion. Discusses Dewey’s relationship with students and associates and
his feelings about the Progressive Education Movement. Additional remarks on
the Blaisdell Institute for the Advanced Study in World Cultures and Religions,
an affiliate of the Claremont Graduate
School.

1931 to 1958. The interview focuses on Mr. Spencer’s career in education during
the period he was at the Graduate School.
