Cathy Carroll, a family business leadership coach, knows from personal experience that family business leaders face unique challenges. Following a twenty-year corporate career, she led her father’s manufacturing business. Now, Carroll is the Founder and President of Legacy Onward Inc., which provides Executive Coaching services for family businesses. She is also the Vice-Chair of the Board at the Purposeful Planning Institute, a nonprofit learning center for advisors and consultants serving families of wealth and family enterprises. In addition, she is the Co-Founder and Treasurer of A Leg to Stand On, a nonprofit organization that gives prosthetic limbs to children in need.
Carroll earned Certificates in Leadership Coaching and Executive Facilitation from Georgetown University, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and a BA from Boston College.

Stephen Goldbart, PhD has over 40 years of professional experience as a licensed clinical psychologist, professor, author, public speaker, and organizational consultant. He is interested in the psychology of life transitions and how wealth can enrich one’s life and the lives of others. Goldbart works with individuals, families and organizations to help them fulfill and maintain their personal, professional, and philanthropic objectives.
Stacy Allred, CFP is the Managing Director Head of Family Engagement and Governance at J.P. Morgan Wealth Management. Previously, she was at Merrill Private Wealth Management and founded the Merrill Center for Family Wealth during her twenty years there. She also provided financial planning and tax services to multigenerational families and executives at Ernst & Young. Allred’s mission is to help individuals and families with topics like family governance, transition planning, and family dynamics.
Joan DiFuria, MFT is a licensed psychotherapist as well as a globally recognized speaker and consultant for family businesses, familiy offices, and families of wealth. She is the co-developer and leader of training programs that address the psychology of wealth and life planning. She also holds 18 years of industry experience as a National Marketing Director and Director of Long-Term Strategic Operations for a multinational metals distribution corporation.

Sudev Sheth is a Senior Lecturer in History at both The Lauder Institute and the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania. He was previously the Harvard Harvard-Newcomen Fellow in Business History at Harvard Business School, where he taught both MBA and doctoral students. His research interests include the social and cultural history of South Asia, as well as business history and family enterprise in past and present societies.
Sheth earned a PhD in History and South Asia Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA in History from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and a BA in South and Southeast Asian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.

Guy Kawasaki is known for his multifaceted contributions as an author, entrepreneur, speaker, and evangelist. He holds decades of experience as a Venture Capitalist and advisor in Silicon Valley. Currently, he is the Chief Evangelist of Canva and previously held that title at Apple. He popularized the concepts of evangelism marketing, technology evangelism, and platform evangelism, especially during his time marketing the Macintosh. Furthermore, Kawasaki is an Executive Fellow at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and an Adjunct Professor at UC Santa Cruz and the University of New South Wales. Kawasaki is also the host of the Remarkable People Podcast, where each guest shares tips and stories that help listeners become more remarkable. In addition, he is a keynote speaker and author on topics like entrepreneurship and innovation.
Kawasaki earned a BA in Psychology from Stanford, an MBA from UCLA, and an honorary doctorate from Babson College.

The sessions focused on unique challenges in family business such as managing generational transitions, balancing tradition with innovation, and ensuring sustainability.

The second session featured keynote speakers Cindi Bigelow, CEO of Bigelow Tea Company, and Professor Pramodita (Dita) Sharma, the Schlesinger-Grossman Chair of Family Business at the Grossman School of Business at the University of Vermont, who shared insights on family business continuity as a force for good. Peter Drucker advised future leaders to prepare for entrepreneurship and innovation. What does this look like for family businesses? INSEAD’s Berghmans Lhoist Chaired Professor in Entrepreneurial Leadership Randel Carlock was the featured speaker for the third session on family entrepreneurship. Carlock led attendees through a hands-on approach to understanding family entrepreneurial behavior and leadership across the founding, professionalizing, and sustaining stages of the family business life cycle. The fourth session focused on a key challenge in family business: managing continuity and change––specifically the process of succession. Simon Cordes (MBA, ’12), fourth generation in a family-owned, mid-size glass manufacturing business in Germany, shared his personal experience of succession within a family business. He was joined by Dennis Jaffe, a leader in family enterprise consulting and clinical psychologist who discuessed the lessons he learned from working with 100-year family enterprises. The fifth session focused on key factors that lead to a prepared and educated rising generation. Peter F. Drucker Chair and Professor of Management Bernard Jaworski set the stage with a presentation on the Drucker principle of managing across multiple time periods. Representatives from Drucker School Global Family Business Institute partners BNY Mellon and Whittier Trust facilitated conversations with family business leaders about their experiences in leading change and passing values down to the next generation. The sixth and final session focused on governance, shared ownership and shared decisions. Professor Katharina Pick, Clinical Associate Professor at the Drucker School, presented on the Drucker principle of managing people. Dave Specht, Director of the Global Family Business Institute, facilitated a conversation with Ben Casper and Teresa Gledhill, siblings from a second generation agriculture operation who shared their experience with navigating the complexities of shared ownership with a family property. We also heard from Robert Duncan, Chairman Emeritus of Duncan Aviation, the largest aviation maintenance company in the world. Family office experts Timothy Lappen, Efi Avigdor, and Ken Kilroy used a life cycle approach to examine the form and function of some of the world’s largest family offices. They discussed the structures that family offices use, concentrating on how family offices can be built, modified, and reinvented to focus on the family’s most precious asset: the family. Why Studying Family Business is Important for Management Scholars: The Family Capital Approach
Dr. Gibb Dyer explained the importance of family business in the world’s economy and how strengthening an owning-family’s “family capital” can lead to positive outcomes for both the family and the business. He also discussed how various disciplines in academia (e.g., psychology, sociology, economics) can be used in the study of family businesses. Implications for both family business theory and practice were discussed, along with a brief history of the field of family business and the key issues in the field that have caught the attention of both academics and practitioners.
Legislative Updates & Tips for Year-End Planning
This talk discussed legislative updates and pending issues that will affect family businesses. Pat Soldano, President and Chairman of Family Enterprise USA and Senior Fellow and founding member of the Global Family Business Institute, discussed national education and advocacy in Washington D.C. aimed at promoting family businesses and their economic growth in the U.S. Bob Renken, Executive Vice President of Whittier Trust, discussed end-of-year tax and estate planning tips that business-owning families should be aware of.
